Over the 10 years of trading and many more of experience in the industry, Axis Controls have recommended the best cost-effective solutions for their clients. Browse our portfolio to find out more about web and winding applications we have designed and installed.
Thus, in this category, we aim to be more detailed about retrofits, upgrades, and other applications we have accomplished, including those that satisfy the requirements of our UL508a certification. For more, we provide a vast portfolio of projects in our gallery.
Latest Case StudyIn 2016 Axis Controls were commissioned by Chase Corporation in Rye Hastings to completely replace the drive control system and operator control desk on one of their Titan SR5 machines.
The existing DC drives were retained, and we designed our winding control system around the Parker 590 DC drive range. We replaced the tacho feedback on the motors with encoder feedback to give a greater level of speed control.
As a Siemens systems integrator, we opted for the ET200SP control platform along with a Siemens 12″ comfort HMI for the operator control interface.
Machine safety was designed around the Sick Flexisoft system. All safety devices including E-stops, gate switches, guard switches and pull wire switches were easily integrated.
Sick ultrasonic sensors were fitted to the top and bottom rewind shafts, to aid the rewind diameter calculations.
SMC electronic pressure regulators ( E2P ) were fitted to the top and bottom rewind differential air shafts. Manual or automatic tension control could then be achieved via the touchscreen interface.
Finally, we installed an SMC anti-static ionization bar above the rewind web path. As the rewind material was a thick industrial plastic film, this eliminated the commonly found static build up.
This rewinder slitter control panel was designed and built for Steadfast Machinery.
The system replaced an ageing Titan 5 control desk, and uses the very latest Parker 890 common bus closed loop vector drives.
The machine control is handled by an Omron CJ2 PLC, which also controls the pneumatic tension system on the unwind and rewind bars.
We used an Omron NS8 touchscreen as the main operator interface.
A Pilz PNOZ safety system was incorporated, for Emergency stop, guard switch, and rope switch safety monitoring.
We used a Sick UM30 digital ultrasonic sensor to provide diameter feedback to the PLC and both top and bottom rewind drives.
Axis Controls also supplied the three closed loop AC vector motors, with Sick programmable encoders.
In 2016 Axis Controls were commissioned by MJ Howard Technical Services to replace the control system and motors on an Eldec DB50 slitter machine.
Problems arose when the original operator station didn’t function correctly, and the SSD 540 DC drive system needed replacing.
Having completed many dozens of Eldec upgrades, we opted to keep using the Parker 890 AC drive system, and replaced the drive motors with new Siemens IE3 vector motors.
We opted for a Siemens ET-200SP PLC which is a smaller version of the S7-1500 platform. The operator control desk was based around a Siemens 9″ Comfort HMI.
Typically, a Sick FlexiSoft safety system was incorporated, for Emergency stop, guard switch, and rope switch safety monitoring.
The rewind diameter calculation feedback came from a Sick UM30 ultrasonic sensor.
In 2016 Axis Controls were asked to upgrade the control system and motors on a Krehalon Eldec DB50 slitter machine by MJ Howard Technical Services.
The existing Heenan drive system was very erratic, with spares being hard to source, so the decision was made to replace these with new AC closed-loop vector motors.
Parker 890 AC drives with a common rail DC bus for dynamic load sharing were selected, each with encoder feedback. We replaced the drive motors with new Siemens IE3 vector motors.
We opted for a Siemens ET-200SP PLC, and the operator control desk was based around a Siemens 9″ Comfort HMI, with a second smaller HMI at the rewind end.
We used a Sick FlexiSoft safety system for monitoring emergency stops, guard switches, a light curtain, and rope switches. The Sick Flexisoft also had a motion input from two shaft encoders – allowing us to mute the light curtains during a safe low speed condition whilst the operator threaded the web path.
The rewind diameter calculation feedback came from two Sick UM30 ultrasonic sensors.
